The Queensland Government, in partnership with the Gladstone Area Water Board, is looking at water security to support the significant, long-term industry in the region which contributes to local employment and the State’s economy.
The proposed Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline is an option to address the single source water supply risk from Awoonga Dam enabling long-term water security for GAWB’s urban and industrial customers. It has the potential to provide water security and, importantly, provide water for the emerging hydrogen industry in the Gladstone region.
The Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water (the Department) has appointed GAWB as the delivery management proponent for pre-construction activities for the Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline project.
The Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline project comprises an approximately 116 km pipeline, a water treatment plant, reservoirs and pumping stations.
The Department is undertaking investigations into the full scope of the project with GAWB is undertaking pre-construction activities in preparation for an investment decision expected by the middle of 2022.

As the delivery management proponent for pre-construction activities, GAWB is responsible for procuring contractors to facilitate the construction of the pipeline, should the Queensland Government decide to proceed to construction.
GAWB’s pre-construction contracting strategy recognises local suppliers and obtaining local services where practicable, to deliver tangible benefits to the Gladstone region such as jobs, supply contracts and local capability raising.

On Wednesday 19 January 2022, GAWB hosted a local supplier industry briefing event to provide an overview of the pre-construction project, opportunities for local suppliers, our approach and commitment to local buy and local content.
